Ennis Tola - Backbone [Remix]

I was honoured to be asked by Ennis Tola to produce this remix for the first single from their new album.

Although I only had a short time to produce the remix I think it worked to my advantage as I just used my instincts and went with the first idea that I had. It's just a simple instrumental re-imagining of the original song but I still enjoy it!

Roni Shewan - Helen

The title track for Roni Shewan's debut is Helen . . Helen has the dubious distinction of being the very first song Roni and I worked on her for her solo project! It's also the most ambitious track we've done yet, mixing electric piano and organ sounds and pizzicato strings with heavily layered vocals and Japanese and Indonesian percussion!

While the basic sound of the song was conceived and produced fairly quickly, there were several iterations of the mix before it started to really come together. The main challenge was in the rhythm section and the co-existence of the massive sounding Taiko drums with the ever-suffering bass-line . . I also wanted a nice, tight and clean sound suitable for the quirky alternative pop sensibilities of the song!

Production on this piece ceased completely for a few months while I was on tour extensively with A State of Flux and Sleep Parade. This served to be a blessing in disguise as upon returning to mix the song with fresh ears/perceptions I was able to instantly identify and remedy problems in the mix and arrangement.

The mix really started to come together after I had transposed the main bass-line up an octave and sucked all the sustain out of the Taikos!! Only then was there room for Roni's fantastic vocals and keyboards and the odd pizzicato violin! The instruments still bleed over each other in a pleasing way (Joe Baressi influence maybe?) but not nearly to the extent that they did in the original mixes . .

Here's a bit of info on some of the weird-ass percussion instruments we used for this song:

Taikos have perhaps the most internationally notorious reputation of any of the drums in the Japanese percussion family. In early Japanese history, Taikos were often used as time-keepers to help motivate marching troops in battle. Taikos are most commonly constructed from large wooden barrels with some sort of animal skins stretched over both openings of the barrel.

The Lion Drums appear similar to and are constructed in the same fashion as Taikos but are much smaller. The particular ones used in this piece were hand made in the United States by a custom drum maker.

The Kendong is generally used as a lead instrument in Gamelan ensembles. This Indonesian drum is constructed of a conical-shaped wooden shell with goatskin stretched across each side. It is played with two hands, or one hand and one stick.

Roni Shewan - This Place We Get To

I recently finished work on the debut single for Melbourne-based solo artist Roni Shewan. Roni and I have worked extensively on a number of her songs and she chose two very different pieces to launch her solo career.

This Place We Get To is a heart-stirring ballad unlike any I have heard before. The song also boasts the vocal talents of a very special guest: folk-rock troubadour Mijo Biscan.

I didn't really make any structural changes to the original demo but rather built everything up around the basic framework of acoustic guitar and vocals. The intro and verses of the song are in 5/8 which smoothly transitions to a 6/8 chorus . . one of the most important things here I believe was staggering the signature changes so that they didn't fall exactly on the start of the different sections, which would have resulted in a more disjointed feel.

The other major changes from the demos were the introduction of an orchestral arrangement for the third verse (which continues through to the end of the song), a new outro and a much slower tempo for the whole song . .

While the song is meant to be fairly repetitive, the orchestral version of the third verse created a nice contrast in the piece and allowed the second chorus to come in a lot stronger, creating a dynamic the song previously lacked. The second chorus is really the emotional peak of the song and the outro feels to me like an unwinding of the sounds/emotions created in the second chorus . . .

The Shadow [MRP Dub Remix]

An experimental remix project from the MR lab in Germany contacted me recently about remixing some of my songs. This served as the catalyst for me creating a bunch of mix stems for a few different songs, two of which have already been posted on this site with more to come . .

The following track is a remix of my song "The Shadow" which has been transformed into a great little down-tempo piece with a very high Moog-factor! If you enjoy definitely check out Metrrorock Projekt over at Soundcloud . .

Very cool! I especially like how the strings from my original version have been modulated to produce a very synth-like sound . . there's some really nice details I only noticed on headphones as well, always good! I'm a sucker for low level indistinct detail! Oxymoron!? Never . . .

Idiophone [IACC Submission - Sampleset #1]

"Imagine you only had one sound to compose from! How much could you tweak this sound to become a living, breathing composition with a variety of different textures?"

This is my submission for the first sampleset (#1) for I.A.C.C.

The original source sample from which every sound you hear was drawn from is a single strike on the inner portion of a small bell . .

The bell was struck with a hard mallet and recorded with a Shure SM-57 microphone into a Focusrite Preamp. The Shure SM-57 was chosen for it's relative low-noise operation, especially crucial when the source sound may be layered over itself hundreds of times . . .

It's interesting to note that every sound you hear in this mix was processed in real-time, and the DAW and the multiple samplers running were all referencing the same 13.5 second WAV file . . playing it again and again over and over itself in extremely different ways . . .

Interpretive Audio Composition Collective

Imagine you only had one sound to compose from! How much could you tweak this sound to become a living, breathing composition with a variety of different textures?

The Interpretive Audio Composition Collective is a Soundcloud-based group dedicated to the pursuit of this concept. The idea is really to dive deep into the source and keep on sculpting it through process until it becomes something you like . . something you regard as a piece of music . .

The possibilities that can be derived from one sound and manipulated through editing, sampling, filtering and a variety of effects are only limited by one's imagination. Recommended tools of the trade include delays, re-sampling, glitching process, vocoders, distortion, time stretching, time freezing and so forth.

Basic Rules

Once every [dynamically determined time period] a source sample will be uploaded by the group moderators

Source sample will always be 44.1khz 16bit WAV (may be mono or stereo)

Members download this source sample and set about constructing their piece

Pieces can be between 1 and 5 minutes long

One can only use the source sample as the sound source, no external sounds!

Process the sample by any means necessary, except re-amping or re-recording. Sample must stay in the digital realm

Once you are happy with your piece, upload it to your Soundcloud account and then add it to the I.A.C.C. group

Please include the name of the source sample in parenthesis in your track title, eg. "Red Black - Rad Track [Sample#1]"

Enjoy basking in the warm glow of rapturous acclaim from your fellow group members!

If the group takes off we may be able to do something more interesting with the submissions . . . A web page is currently in construction to show off the submissions!

I started this cosm piece other day/night whatever time it was I cannot recall I think I was very delirious. Repetition can be a very powerful and hypnotic device in music and is definitely something I'm trying to exploit with cosm. Either that, or I'm subconsciously looking for an excuse to make music into which I can easily encode brainwave frequencies that affect the listener's state of mind as their own brain attempts to synchronise with said frequencies.

Someone from Germany sent me a message on the interweb recently saying that they really liked my darkwave music. I don't know how i feel about that :| What exactly is darkwave anyway???
